Tame Who’s Monkey?
Humans have advanced a lot; we have jobs, complex cities, invisible frequencies that give us sounds and images, “smart” phones, etc. We’re amazing! But a byproduct of these advancements is that life has become much more complicated. Back in the good ole days of hunting, scavenging, and dying in your 30s, we did not have to worry about what our career would be, our mortgage, or getting to places on time with heavy traffic. Shout out to LA. This new complex lifestyle fuels what the Zen Buddhists call the monkey mind. The monkey loves to hear itself speak and it’s not afraid to comment on anything; for example it may say, “You need to finish your essay and do laundry before 5pm so you can have some time to spend with your girlfriend. You’ve been neglecting her recently. Also, you have 60k in student loan debt, maybe you should work on weekends if you want to pay that off”. This constant chatter causes stress that can negatively impact our health. The product of this constant chatter can be anxiety, health issues, and in some severe cases, depression and suicide. Clearly, this is an issue that must be addressed. Personally, the constant chatter of my monkey makes me anxious and sometimes unappreciative of the good around me, because I am busy focusing on the worries on my mind. I know that there are millions of people just like me out there being abused by their monkey mind. Not another day! It is time that we take control of our stress instead of being victims of our own mental torture! I will be conducting research on the different methods of stress management that people all around the world do and will report what I find to all of you lovely people. Whether it is technique done in Japan today or was done in India hundreds of years ago, we’ll search to find the cure we’re look for. Today we embark on a journey to find different techniques to tame the monkey, so that we may live healthy and happy lives!
